As one of the country’s foremost painters and sculptors, National Artist Arturo Luz has dabbled in a variety of media. His foray into the medium of wood, however, is rare. Hence, this work is something to behold. Embodying the clean lines of his abstraction, the work structurally resembles a cruciform, which merges with the sculptural elements of a bar and a curvilinear base. The natural grain and polish of the wood delivers an organic touch and a warm glow to the eloquent form. Striking a balance between stability and lightness, between compactness and openness, this sculpture captures the deftness of the master’s hand at the height of his powers.
