During the first years of the American occupation, there was a harsh campaign to discredit the religious orders that had worked in the country. In this context, several works were published favoring and against the friars. Eladio Zamora was an Augustinian friar who worked on the island of Panay in two periods (1875-93) and (1895- 98). He died a year and a half after publishing the present work. It is a passionate defense of the friars, especiallythe Augustinians, as agents of culture and peace in the archipelago. He provides numerous pieces of evidence of how the friars helped the progress of culture, education, industry, and agriculture among the indigenous people.
