Here were none of the subtleties of colour Alcuaz had found in his depiction of cities in Europe, but instead the strident glare of the sea and manmade objects, the large ships made small by the sheer scale of the bay, providing sharp visual contrasts. Alcuaz never became complacent but was always looking for the final answer to that elusive truth about visual reality which motivated his painting. The Manila bay was an eye opener, with its shimmering light and extravagant abundance of water, represented by a singular color.
