ABOUT THE WORK

Mario Parial’s method emphasizes the subject or subjects alone instead of situating his composition as the focal point. By doing so, the human subject or subjects make for the painting as a whole. Mario Parial indigenizes his depiction of four women by infusing the subjects with folk motifs as well as local imagery and colors. The use of colors not conventionally associated with rural themes, and the brilliant patterns on the fabric helps in adding life to the theme. Drawing inspiration from the stylization of figures in such, his works have possessed similar planar qualities, all while retaining very modest Filipino characterHe had taught at the former College of Architecture and Fine Arts in UST and at College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines. Mario Parial was a member of the Art Association of the Philippines and the Printmakers Association of the Philippines. (J. D.)
