ABOUT THE WORK

The subject itself is a human representation of panic. Like most forms of panic, it emanates from a vague and uneasy source. The tragic characters of Ang Kiukok, forming and disintegrating before our eyes, symbolize the precariousness of human life, the fate of his enterprises always threatened, destroyed, and recommenced. How Ang kept his guard against the pretty had been reinforced by a gift from a friend: a book on Francis Bacon which featured color plates of his hallucinatory landscapes and lonely people disintegrating and contorting in ghoulish torment. In his figure scenes, the English artist always continued to investigate the irrational aspects of man’s encounter with nature, although with more explicit concern for the monstrous and horrible experiences. Consequently, the subjects of Ang’s easel metamorphosed into a variety of odd ways.
