Teodoro Buenaventura is known throughout his home country for his vibrantly colorful and thickly painted depictions of landscapes and people of the Philippines. He often focused on quiet scenes of the everyday Filipino domestic and agrarian life—farmers plowing fields or fishermen coming back from the sea. In this work of art, Buenaventura gives justice to portraiture in the image of a stern-looking old man in deep contemplation while enjoying his cigar.
