ABOUT THE WORK

Buen Calubayan has grown from strength to strength in depicting scenery ringing with alarm and premonition. In this work, a view of a mountain (possibly the fabled and, in the case of the artist, favored Mt. Banahaw) verges into abstraction with the loose and atmospheric painterly strokes. The artist’s gesture seems to approximate the tumult of subjectivity as he grapples with the exploding collision of history, myth, and the natural world. 107
