“The control of Mindanao is an undertaking that demands time, resources, and perseverance. The complete domination of Mindanao cannot be obtained as a consequence of a single campaign, no matter how decisive it may be, nor is it possible to change in a few months the social and political conditions of a heterogeneous people composed of tribes and families of different civilizations and religions, scattered over an extensive, rugged island, cut by large and deep rivers, and sparsely populated in relation to its surface”. Thus begins the report of Julián González Parrado (1841- 1915), who was then a brigadier general and had a brilliant military career. He arrived in the Philippines in 1882 to take charge of an infantry regiment in Cavite. On October 22 of the same year, he was appointed political-military governor of Sulu. On the 23rd, under the orders of Brigadier José María Paulín, he participated in the combat of the Looc Valley and on November 8 in Boal. In 1884 and 1885, he participated in several battles against the Moro pirates in Mindanao. He went to Spain in March 1888 and returned to the Philippines in 1892 to take charge of the political-military government of Mindanao. He participated in numerous military operations in Mindanao in 1894 and 1895 until, ill, he had to return to Spain in May 1896. The book begins by providing a series of information concerning geographic data, population, a brief history of the wars against the Moros in the 19th century, etc.. Gonzalez Parrado proposes a plan of military conquest that gives rise to a purely military government without officials or friars in the Muslim areas, assuming the impossibility of converting them to Christianity. He analyzes the existing towns the Spanish army forces settled in them and Basilan, with the names of all the mayors and principals of the towns, and outlines a strategy of conquest that passes through the isolation of the Muslim ports. The book’s second part is a brief plan for the domination of the Lanao Lagoon. Of great interest is the folded map of Mindanao. Rare.
