In 1954 the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica of the Spanish government awarded Jose Joya a one year grant to study painting in Madrid. Scholarships in Madrid were made possible through the influence of the Philippine Art Gallery member Fernando Zobel. Highly inspired by his scholarship and sojourn to Spain, Susurro del Mar (or Whisper of the Sea) was painted in the same year of 1961 when the modern master received the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in painting and became one of the recipients of the Ten Outstanding Young Men Award in the category of art. Susurro del Mar is part of Jose Joya’s abstract expressionist period where he allowed all his power and painterly vitality to let loose.
