ABOUT THE WORK

Sofronio Y. Mendoza (SYM) often concerned himself with the unique life-worlds contained within the inherent intersubjectivity of city life. For him, the city was not merely a geographical backdrop whose material physicality is only a mere outward expression of human ingenuity and rationality, but a living being whose twists and turns affect the conscious states of those that live and thrive within it. Mendoza’s historically radical idea still holds true today as we refer to the essence and culture of a place as its fragmented yet palpable soul. As a member of the Dimasalang Group, Sofronio Y. Mendoza thrived in structure and the use of color, often seen as the antithesis to the dominant modernist of the 1970s. Mendoza’s paintings often depict lush and vibrant sceneries of idyllic landscapes that harken back to a classical style. The artist makes it a habit to imbue his works with a sincere sense of vitality that aptly captures both the aesthetic and essence of his subjects.
