ABOUT THE WORK

Ramon Orlina’s mastery of the glass cannot be understated. Selftaught, his proficiency with the cold-cutting technique was a series of trial and error; prior to Orlina, there was no one who did that kind of cutting technique. It was this pioneering act that earned Orlina the moniker “Father of Philippine Glass Sculpture.”

This 2010 sculpture is Orlina at his finest – with an intimate knowledge of light and depth, he creates a truly interesting experience that can be viewed from every possible angle. It is a dialogue between sculptor and audience, a harmonious connection between light, shadow, and luminosity to create every possible sensory effect.

“You know, glass is transparent so it is much harder to work with than something opaque or something you cannot see through,” said Orlina in a 2002 interview with Philstar Global. “Not only do you have to design it so that it looks good all around, but you have to think about what one side will look like from the other side because you can see through the glass.” (Hannah Valiente)
