ABOUT THE WORK

Amorsolo was still probably a student in 1917 when he did this painting, probably from a studio model, or painted from a photograph, as evidenced by the effort he puts in depicting the hair strands and the blades of grass. Amorsolo’s painting continues the “naturalistic “cum academic style established in the late 19th century and continued in the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, where he was to study and later, teach. Although it may be a portrait of a particular unnamed subject, the painting represents an ideal type that is both a laid back universal image and model of archetypal Filipino manhood. His mastery of painting techniques enabled him to create the effect of reflected light within deep shadow, as well as to suggest the texture of flesh.
