ABOUT THE WORK

Marina Cruz has always been drawn to painting articles of clothing, evoking not only their formal qualities but also the history of those who wore them. In this highly poetic work, the clothing is a chemise that has become almost translucent through frequent wearing. Amid its plainness and a torn part, the clothing is evidently cherished, as revealed by the child-like designs — birds and hearts — lovingly stitched to it. The girl who may have once owned it is depicted on the lower left-side of the chemise, holding threads connecting her to everything that is possible through the benevolence of the imagination
