Simon was a fisherman whom Jesus Christ called out of the Sea of Galilee along with his brother Andrew. Jesus changed his name to Peter, meaning “Rock.” Peter was a rough, impetuous man given to rash actions. However, Jesus saw these as the qualities of a prospective leader. Jesus predicted that Peter would deny him to his enemies. During the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane… Peter fell asleep along with the brothers James and John. Peter tried to defend him by cutting off the soldier’s ear, but Jesus healed it. Peter denied him three times as the rooster crowed, just as Jesus had predicted. Peter fled. Peter was not at the Crucifixion in Calvary. When Mary Magdalene reported that she had seen Jesus Christ resurrected, Peter and John ran to the tomb and saw it empty.
