ABOUT THE WORK

The works of Oscar Zalameda are often touted as one of most emblematic examples of cubism in Filipino Modernism. Though Zalameda’s earlier works featured looser and more abstract compositions, Zalameda eventually developed his unique cubist style through rigorous artistic experimentation. The stylized figuration of his local subjects, trees, and rocks show his signature “soft” cubist techniques. During the sixties and seventies, the bon vivant artist was among the favorite artists of Manila’s high society. Born in Lucban, Quezon, Oscar Zalameda took his fine arts degree at the University of Sto. Tomas, and pursued further studies at the Art League of California in San Francisco, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, and the Sorbonne University in Paris. Zalameda was also able to study mural techniques under Diego Rivera in Mexico.
