The great Filipino painter Hugo Yonzon Jr. explored a variety of art styles throughout his evolution as an artist. As he shifted back and forth between different approaches, what remains constant is his subject matter, from the everyday people to those part of Philippine myths and history. One of the major postwar Filipino modernists, Yonzon also depicts significant historical events and scenes in the country. Here, he gives a representation of the barter trade as an early economic system during the early days and the relationship of the Filipinos and the Chinese recorded in history. Most of his works are in oil, his most preferred medium as a visual storyteller. This work is a great example of Yonzon’s masterful techniques and the naturalness of the narrative quality of his rendered imagery. Coloration is also distinct here, and the features of his figures are stylistically detailed.
