ABOUT THE WORK

Since the church had a prominent place in provincial life, it is not surprising that Cesar Buenaventura painted it as an exemplary subject. In this picture of a provincial church, the artist has made the church more imposing than in reality. He depicts a traditional subject through a single image approach to space. It is a device akin to the literal representation associated with the Magic Realism of the 1960s. The church, set against a soft, atmospheric background, is done in an almost photo-realist manner.
