Lee Aguinaldo’s Linear series, when presented in one of his major exhibitions, caused quite a stir and “broke new ground by defying what is conventionally perceived as the Filipino sense of beauty.” Aguinaldo favored the pragmatic quality of linear forms in his paintings. Not by chance and not for convenience.

This format makes it possible to bathe the subject in an atmosphere of rationality. For Aguinaldo, the stringent yet delicate application of planar arrangements was the logical conclusion of his artistic expression. The smoothness of the surface quality of his edgy oeuvre combined the seemingly contradictory traits of intense painting and minimalism.
