Among the conservatives in the postwar Philippine art scene, Crispin V. Lopez had been among the more notable Mabini artists. With a vibrant style that features the blazing Philippine sun, and highlights resembling Fernando Amorsolo’s backlighting technique, there is a strong classical quality in Lopez’ works. Superior is his draughtsmanship, putting forth photorealistic depictions of rural life. As in this work, there is much technicality on display – from the lighting and shadows to the atmospheric backdrop. Such recreates the scene brilliantly; eloquently capturing this vignette of the idyllic past.
