Still life continued to play with the concept of the fleeting nature of life through the metaphor of flowers. Influenced by Giacometti of the Neo-Figurative School, Szeto Lap looked for the "absolute reality" of subjects. Szeto was indeed a Chinese artist equipped with both artistic and philosophic notions.
At first glance, Szeto Lap’s flowers appear lively and spirited, but upon closer look, several of the flowers are bending away from light, reminding the viewer of the brevity of beauty, and that ‘still life’ is not really still at all.
Szeto studied Fine arts in Guangzhou before immigrating to France in 1975. After a solo exhibition in Paris, he won awards including the Feneon Prize and later the Grand Prize for Painting granted by the Institute of France. His works are collected by Le Centre National d'Art de la Culture, Georges Pompidou as well as various other European museums.
