Eduardo Catrillo’s highly personal approach to sculpture is marked by intensity and delicacy. He was fluent in both the micro form of jewelry with its small exquisite features as well as the macro form of public sculptures of towering dimensions. A hybrid of different historical styles (i.e. the little cross behind the body of the Christ may appear to be a Maltese cross to some viewers), Castrillo’s crucifix is one of the enduring motifs of his oeuvre, emphasizing the sacrifice of Jesus. His death by crucifixion, Christians believe, brought about the redemption of mankind.
