Chiefly known for his oil-on-canvas works that first introduced pictorial distortions to Philippine visual arts, gaining him the rightful title as the Father of Philippine Modernism, Victorio Edades also accomplished a sizeable number of pen-and-ink works, which have this piece as a superb example. In this work, we are shown a woman washing her hair in a pail of water. Her absorption in her ablution is evoked by the clarity of the master’s strokes. Near her is a chair, a stock image of the Post-Impressionists, which repeats the fluid curves of her body. While the National Artist may have ventured into experimentation toward his forms, this work exemplifies that he did not abandon compositional balance.
