Ricarte Puruganan, who was among the 13 Moderns, was never a part of the flowering of non-objective art in the Philippines, yet the abstract dynamism of this work says otherwise. He was rooted in a uniquely indigenous palette coupled with color and composition theories which he has written about. Puruganan treated color according to theory of simultaneous contrasts, whereby color is both form and subject. His predilection for decorative art became pronounced with his liking for shapes of color to indicate forms which do not have to be recognizable. Many of his bolder works have always fused the fine and decorative arts.
