Known for his layer-upon-layer of diaphanous forms that composed his abstract language, Romulo Olazo was also an accomplished figurative artist, which this pen-and-ink drawing shows. Evoked through spontaneous strokes, the image is a mother carrying a child on her back. One can detect that the curvilinear shapes and forms are essentially the building blocks of his abstraction, particularly those of his Permutation series, which is considered landmark in Philippine visual arts.
